Traditional NLP Training Techniques

There’s a new trend that is taking the world by storm today. It’s helping people achieve their ideal personalities, improve their working performance, boost their careers, and erase the negative habits and characteristics that keep them from doing their best. This trend is NLP, or neuro-linguistic programming. Developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the University of California, NLP was originally used for psychotherapeutic purposes. It was used primarily to treat patients who are suffering from depression, phobias, and other personality problems. With the early development of the approach being influenced by experts in diverse field like psychotherapy, linguistics, family development, and communication, NLP became an integrated therapeutic method of sorts. It was grounded on a multi-perspective basis and used varied aspects of the human faculty: speech, language, mental and nervous processes, social relations, and many others.

What is probably the foundational and most well-known concept that Bandler and Grinder came up with is the Meta-model of NLP.  It is a model of communication that aims to observe and provide an in-depth analysis of an individual’s, or the patient’s linguistic aspect.

Hypnotism is also one of the concepts that are closely related to NLP, due to the fact that Milton Erickson, who is known to be one of the pioneers of hypnotherapy, was also involved in the development of NLP. Milton’s studies on the NLP approach also paved the way for the birth of another popular NLP model, the Milton model.

Over the years, along with the growth of NLP training as a business came a new set of principles and techniques developed by different institutes to be part of their own mode of NLP courses. They now teach NLP principles to different kinds of individuals—from students and housewives to bosses and employees.

But despite these innovations and innovations from the original concepts, a lot of NLP training courses still make use of the more ‘traditional’ methods like reframing, representational systems, and anchoring, which are essential in the improvement of an individual’s personality and outlook in life.
